I Love the new forest, shame that all the oak trees were cut down to build the Tudor fleets (Bucklers Hard etc)doesn`t seem like any more have been planted to replace them? only scrubby trees and bracken to date, so where does the "new" bit of the name come from?
Rob, there are still plenty of woods around, especially north of Lyndhurst. I think the New Forest bit comes from the time when William the Conquerer made the area into an exclusive are for the privileged for hunting etc.
